what are vitamins
Vitamins are the organic compound, that needs for the growth, health and metabolic process of animals and human beings. Vitamin requires in a very small amount in the body. Most of the vitamins can’t be produced in our body, so we should be take them in diet plants can synthesize all vitamins but animals can synthesize very few. Vitamins like vitamin D which are present in nature produced in the skin by the irradiation of ergosterol with u.v. light. The human body can also synthesize some vitamin A for carotenes, some components of vitamin B complex and vitamin K are synthesized by microorganism present in the intestinal tract.
Classification of Vitamins:-
Vitamins are classified into two types i. e. fat-soluble vitamin and water-soluble vitamin.
Fat-soluble vitamin:- These vitamins are oily substance and can’t dissolve in water, but they are soluble in fat. Excess intake of these vitamins are harmful to health and can cause hyper vitamines.

These are water-soluble vitamins and insoluble in fat and oils. Excess take of these vitamins is not harmful to health because these are excreted out from the body regularly by urine.
Ex:- Vitamin B complex and C.
Vitamin B1(which is water soluble vitamin)
The chemical name of vitamin B1 is Thiamine and it commonly called Aneurin or Antineuriticvitamin.
Function:- It helps in the conversion of food into energy in the body. It also help in to build the structure of brain cells.
Source:- It found in pulses, nut, whole cereals, legumes, yeast, meat, fish, egg, yolk, milk, green vegetables in fruits.
Deficiency Disease:- Beriberi disease, in which legs get paralysed and losses of appetite in which patient are not interested in taking of food and polyneuritis may also occur as vitamin B1 is the key for brain str.
• In polished rice and wheat flour deficiency of B1 found.
Vitamin B2(which is water soluble vitamin)
Its chemical name is Riboflavin.
Function:- It needs for healthy functioning of the eye, ear, skin and RBC . It also made the lining of the digestive tract.
Source:- Dairy products, milk, meat, eggs, nuts, enriched flour and green vegetables.
Deficiency Disease:- Cheilosis, angular stomatitis, dermatitis, burning sensation in skin and eyes.
Vitamin B3(which is water soluble vitamin)
Its chemical name is Niacin.
Function:- It is necessary for healthy functioning of the neural system, digestive system, lower cholesterol, good for skin hair and is also helped in enzyme synthesis.
Source:- Meat, fish, eggs, milk, cereals, mushroom, guava etc.
Deficiency Disease:- Main disease is pellagra. It is commonly called 3Ddisease that means inflammation of the skin dermatitis, diarrhoea, short-time memory loss or dementia. Another disease edge increase blood cholesterol level. cholesterol is of 2 types, one is low-density lipoprotein(LDC)And another is high-density lipoprotein(HDL). HDL is not so dangerous because cholesterol is suspended and sit inside the lower part of the artery and blood can pass through it. But in LDL cholesterol are suspended and can blog our artery and blood can’t pass through the artery to the brain and can cause a heart attack. So we check our blood cholesterol level on regular basis.
Its chemical name is pantothenic acid.
Function:- It converts food into glucose and synthesis cholesterol, forming sex and stress-related hormones, forming RBC.
Source:- Meat, vegetables, cereal grains, legumes, eggs, and milk.
Deficiency Disease:-Generalised malaise, irritability, insomnia, vomiting, depression, stomach pain.
Its chemical name is pyridoxine.
Function:- It benefits CNS and metabolism. Its role is turning food into energy and helping to create neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine.
Source :- cereals grains, legumes, green and leaf vegetables fish, meat and poultry nuts.
Deficiency Disease:- Its deficiency is rare. People who drank excess alcohol may suffer from this disease. Women who take contraceptive pills are suffering from this deficiency and people who also suffering from T.B. when they are taking isoniazid tablet, this tablet can cause deficiency op vitamin B6 in our body, so people who were suffering from T.B . also provide vitamin B6 tablet with isoniazid tablets. Its deficiency can cause peripheral neuropathy, seborrheic dermatitis, cheilosis, depression etc.
Its chemical name is biotin.
Function:- It is necessary for our hair, nail and skin. It also helps in the metabolic process including the synthesis of amino acid, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.
Source :- Biotin cannot be prepare by our body , so we totally depend on diet for this. The main sources are only bacteria, yeasts, algae, and certain plants.
Deficiency Disease:- Loss of hair, dry nail and skin red rash around the eyes. conjunctivitis, nausea, vomiting etc.
Its chemical name is folate or folic acid.
Function:- Help in form of DNA and RNA and help in protein metabolism. It also helps in preparing RBC and helps in fetal development.
Source:- Leafy green vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and lettuce cereals, beans, peas and lentils.
Deficiency Disease:- Anemia fatigue, grey hair, mouth sores, tongue swelling.
Its chemical name is cobalamine.
Function:- Help in preparing RBC and formation of neurological function and DNA synthesis.
Source:- B12 are not found in plant products, they are found in an animal product like fish, meat, egg and milk etc.
Disorder:- Megolablasticanemia and neurological disorder.
water soluble vitamin c-
Its chemical name is ascorbic acid.
Function:- It is the main source that helps to build immunity power in our body. It also helps to make collagen which is helpful in preparing cartilages that made ligaments and tendons. It also helps absorb iron.
Source:- Main source are citrus fruits, oranges, grapefruits, tomatoes, potatoes, green peas etc.
Deficiency Disease:- Main deficiency of vitamin C is scurvy and anaemia. The main symptoms of scurvy are bleeding from gums, pain in limbs, swelling in some parts of the body etc.
